Canine Influenza

No cases have been identified in Canada.

The risk of influenza virus transmission from an infected dog to a human being is minimal.

Researchers from the College of veterinary medicine at the University of Florida have isolated 3 influenza viruses from outbreaks of severe respiratory disease in racing greyhounds. The viruses have similarities to an equine influenza virus. A veterinary advisory has been issued in the state of Florida suggesting that this could be a new respiratory disease in dogs. It manifests clinical syndromes that mimics “kennel cough”.

Clinical signs: All dogs, regardless of age and breed, are susceptible to the infection. No dogs possess natural or vaccine induced immunity. Two forms of the disease have been identified:

Milder form. Most dogs seem to acquire the milder form (80%).  The symptoms are soft, moist cough non-responsive to antibiotics and cough suppressants.  In addition, low grade fever and nasal discharge has been observed. The cough usually lasts for about 10 to 21 days.

Severe respiratory form. Clinical signs of pneumonia are observed.

The virus has an incubation period of 2 to 5 days. Infected dogs can spread the virus 7 to 10 days from the initial day of clinical signs. Transmission can occur through the air. The virus is susceptible to routine disinfectants and bleach.

Following are the states where the virus has been observed:Florida, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, West Virginia, Kansas, Arizona, West Virginia, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
