Our East Kootenay veterinary team aims to provide the highest possible quality of care to your puppy or kitten alongside guidance and advice for you throughout their all-important first year of life.
Care for Puppies & Kittens
It is exciting to have a new kitten or puppy introduced to your household. This cute, cuddly new family member can't help but make everyone who interacts with them smile.
There are, however, some serious health matters that you will need to attend to during your young pet's pivotal first year of life.
We will work with you to develop a custom health care plan for your pet's unique needs. And we will be sure to provide you with support and expert guidance along the way too.
Your Pet’s First Appointment
Kittens should have their first veterinary appointment around eight weeks old, and puppies should have theirs slightly before that, at around six weeks old. We will also perform routine bloodwork a month prior to your puppy or kitten’s spay or neuter.
Physical Exams
During this initial visit, your pet will receive a complete physical examination to assess their overall health, check for external parasites, and assess them for any potential emergent health issues.
Necessary Treatments
We will also administer the first round of puppy or kitten vaccinations as well as deworming medications for roundworms and hookworms.
More About Vaccines & Prevention
Finally, we will perform a blood test to check your new kitten for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia.
Follow-up Appointments
Your new puppy or kitten should attend between three and four appointments with us between six and sixteen weeks of age. This will allow our veterinarians to monitor your pet's overall health and administer vaccines on the required schedule.
